Nineteen Churches Send Kids to Camp on “First Camper” Scholarship

Nineteen Churches Send Kids to Camp on “First Camper” Scholarship

Nineteen youth around the Upper NY Annual Conference went to camp at no cost to their families on a “First Camper” Scholarship during the summer of 2012. Churches that have not had youth attend a summer program at one of the six camp & retreat centers in the UNYAC in at least five years, are embracing the opportunity to send a child to one week of camp for FREE

This scholarship was the brainstorm of Mike Huber, Director of Camp & Retreat Ministries. “It’s actually a no-brainer.” Huber said. “We know that spending a week at summer camp transforms kids’ lives and infuses energy into the life of the local church. If we can get kids to camp, it’s a great investment – and one to which CRM is committed.”

The following churches, representing 10 districts of the UNY Conference, sent “first campers” to summer programs at Aldersgate, Casowasco, Findley, Sky Lake and Skye Farm:

  • Amherst: Trinity UMC
  • Alexandria Bay UMC
  • Barneveld: Center Point Christian Fellowship
  • Blockville UMC
  • Branchport UMC
  • Chestertown UMC
  • Coopertown UMC
  • Dunkirk UMC
  • East Schuyler UMC
  • Edwards Chapel UMC
  • Hamburg UMC
  • Lakewood UMC
  • McGraw UMC
  • North Sanford UMC
  • Rathbone UMC
  • Watkins Glen UMC
  • West Schuyler UMC
  • Willet UMC
  • Willsboro UMC

Camp & Retreat Ministries says “Thank You” to these churches for making families aware of this opportunity!

“Big Feet” Programs a Hit at Skye Farm

“Big Feet” Programs a Hit at Skye Farm

Many of Skye Farm’s programs are similar to those at the other five Upper New York Conference sites. However, Skye Farm also offers a series of programs for younger children who are accompanied by an adult. Named “Big Feet-Tiny Feet”,” Big Feet-Little Feet, and “Golden Feet-Little Feet”, they are designed for children as young as 3 years old, accompanied by an adult who most often is a parent, or children in the earliest grades accompanied by a grandparent. Less than a week in duration, usually 3 or 4 days, they are housed in a more home-like building rather than our cabins where there is no electricity.

These programs are designed to introduce children and adults to a variety of camping experiences while still providing a secure and more usual setting. Skye Farm has been fortunate to have the same couple, Pat & Mike Thomas, serve as Deans of each of these programs, so there is continuity and progression of experiences depending upon the ages of the children. These “Feet” programs are excellent introductory experiences which make very good use of the facilities at Skye Farm.

Promote Skye Farm in your Church

Staff from Skye Farm Camp & Retreat Center are available to visit your church congregation to promote the camp and retreat ministries! Staff will come and speak to the church through a sermon, children’s time, or missions moment! Also, staff would love to meet with Sunday School and youth groups in an interactive experience.

Having difficulty promoting Camp & Retreat Ministries in your church? The best way is to have someone come and talk and meet staff and volunteers that are passionate about transforming lives!
